Tangisan Alam, Tangisan Kemiskinan

In East Nusa Tenggara (Nusa Tenggara Timur, NTT), the problems of drought and scarcity of food and water threaten the sustainability of the population. The ecological problems have a crucial impact on the stability of social and economic lives of the people in NTT. The cause is the rampant activity of forest conversion into monocultural farming area. The monocultural farming system is a product of a capitalistic economy that is intertwined with the rapidly globalized “neoliberal” market forces impacting on the ecological and economic poverty of society in NTT.
In my study of Leonardo Boff and Pope Francis, I take an inspiration calling for the liberation of the nature and the poor from the destructive economic forces of capitalism. Boff and Pope Francis affirm that the principle of economy of humanity must correspond with the natural economy of nature. Ecology and economy need to be pursued in mutual connectivity. This study seeks a theological perspective of liberation spirituality to address the ecological and economic crises.
