This thesis offers a feminist liturgical and theological perspective on Eucharist as a missional symbol that challenges any forms of discrimination and marginalization against women and the so-called “others.” It argues that as a missional symbol, the Eucharist reflects God’s inclusive love that does not discriminates. It is a love that embraces differences.
Using the term event—in reference to Eucharist as Christ event—this study extends the meaning of the Eucharist as a reminder of church identity of God’s people to that of the call to church to be inclusive and welcoming community. It brings into dialogue the David N. Power’s theological thought of the Eucharist as Christ event, Miriam Therese Winter’s analysis on the “eucharist with a small ‘e’,” and the theological feminist explorations on the social and political meaning of the Eucharist as provided by Susan A. Ross and Andrea Bieler and Luise Schottroff. The purpose is to give a feminist missiological basis on the interconnection between the Eucharist as a missional symbol with the liberation of women and the marginalized in and outside the church.
